What is the best pastel de nata in Lisbon? The answer depends on our mood. Some days, we like them perfumed with lemon. Other days, we prefer them scented with vanilla.
Our current favorites are the lemony kind. They are made by Manteigaria in Praça Camões near Chiado at a location that was once occupied by a butter shop (manteiga is the Portuguese word for butter). Perhaps as an homage to the past, Manteigaria’s pasteis have a buttery taste. The crispy crust and the rich filling are so satisfying that they make us feel, for a moment, that we discovered the meaning of life.
Whenever a new batch of pasteis comes hot out of the oven, Mantegaria’s cashier rings a bell. You’ll see people dropping what they’re doing and rushing to Manteigaria in search of a moment of sweetness.
Manteigaria is located on Rua do Loreto, 2 near Chiado in Lisbon, tel. 21-347-1492.
oh you are making my mouth water!

Be careful their pastries are highly addictive!
Recently visited Lisbon for 3 wks. & went on a mission to find the best of the best pastel de nata.
Manteigaria was the winner, hands-down. The uniquely crispy texture & buttery crust, with the most sublime filling was incomparable…”the meaning of life”.
While there, a local woman insisted l try her wine (port?) with the pastel, her favorite way. She was charming & generous, however, I prefer not to interfere with the taste sensation & like my pastel as a solo act.
We are on the same page. We love their pasteis!
I like them with cinnamon on top…!
So do we!
Welcome to my hometown 🙂 PedroL
When we visited Lisbon in May, my wife and I walked past Praca Luis de Camoes, and found a long queue in front of a shop selling pastel de nata. We joined the queue (who wouldn’t?) and loved the sweet. Now we find independent opinion, apart from the 20 others in queue with us, that this is one of the best places to eat PdNs! Here’s to serendipity.

One of our favorite treats. Mmmm
Great recommendation, just like JA’s taverna we were not disappointed during our trip to Lisbon from Cascais today. What a great flavor!
Makes us wanting to leave Tioga at anchor a little longer before we leave to Madeira

Thanks to reading your blog, I visited this wonderful shop. Such a joy to not just eat but to stand and watch the mastery of the pasteis being made.
